Your Imagen sensor was designed to be truly plug-and-play. Follow these steps in order — the whole setup takes about 15 minutes, and no IT experience is required. The same steps apply to both the human and the veterinary edition of ArchiMED.
Your kit has three USB devices. Each one connects at a specific step — this panel lights up as you complete them.
Open your Imagen box and check that all three items are there. You'll also need a Windows 10 or 11 computer with a free USB-A port.
Imagen sensorWith its white protective cover — keep the cover on whenever the sensor is not in use.
Installer flash driveContains the ArchiMED software, drivers, manuals and your sensor's own calibration files.
License dongleYour software license lives on this key. It is unique and personal — store it like a valuable.
Golden rule: start with nothing plugged in. Don't connect the sensor or the license dongle yet — each device has its moment, and this guide tells you exactly when. Plugging them in early is the #1 cause of installation problems. Already plugged something in? No harm done: unplug it and start from Step 1.
Tap each step when you finish it — the bar at the top tracks your progress.
Close all open programs. If your antivirus is very aggressive, pause it during the installation (you can turn it back on right after).
Make sure you're logged into Windows as an administrator account.
Insert the installer flash drive into a USB port. Do not connect the sensor or the license dongle yet.
Open the drive in File Explorer, right-click Setup and choose "Run as administrator".
In the installer window, click "Program Installation", then Next.
Accept the license terms and click Next again. The software installs itself — just wait and click Finish at the end.
Right after the program, the installer offers to set up the drivers for the USB license key. Accept and click Next.
Windows will ask to add a firewall exception — click "Yes". This is expected and safe; without it, the license key cannot be recognized.
Wait for it to complete and click Finish.
Insert the license dongle into a free USB port. It holds your software license and must stay connected whenever you use the software.
Best practice: use a rear USB port on a desktop PC, where the dongle is protected and out of the way.
Open ArchiMED from the desktop icon. On the very first launch, the software asks you to create the image database: select the disk where your X-ray images will be stored (drive C: is fine) and press Add. Don't skip this — without a database, no image can be saved.
Sign in as Admin with the default password 12345678. The software will immediately ask you to create your own secure password — this protects your patient data.
Then fill in your practice information when prompted. Enter it carefully: this data is stamped into the clinical record of every image you acquire.
Plug the Imagen sensor into a free USB-A port on the computer itself (avoid USB hubs). Always hold it by the connector — never pull or twist the cable.
Windows will recognize it in a few seconds. In ArchiMED, choose the Intraoral category, enter the Setup menu, select your sensor model from the device list, and save.
Go back with Previous — a pop-up window appears, and if the installation is correct the logo turns green. Green logo = your sensor is ready to shoot.
Slide a disposable hygiene sheath over the sensor (a new one for every patient).
Create a test patient in ArchiMED (the orange fields are mandatory), then double-click the patient's name to open the acquisition screen. Position the sensor with the flat side facing the X-ray source, and press the exposure button on your X-ray unit. The recommended range is 60–70 kV — if you shoot with the XRD 70, its 70 kV output is a perfect match.
Your image appears on screen within seconds. That's it — you're fully installed.
Nine times out of ten it's one of these. Each fix takes under five minutes.
First, the obvious: check the sensor is firmly plugged in — and try another USB port on the computer itself (avoid USB hubs).
If it still doesn't appear: open Windows Device Manager and check whether the sensor is listed. If it isn't recognized, run all pending Windows Updates (including optional ones), temporarily disable antivirus and firewall, restart the PC, and run the sensor driver setup again from the installer flash drive — it's inside the folder named after your sensor's serial number. Then test again.
This is almost always Windows putting the USB controller to sleep. Open Device Manager → System devices → Intel(R) Management Engine Interface, right-click Properties → Power Management, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Click OK and try again.
Check that the license dongle is plugged in — it must be connected every time you use the software. If it's in and still not recognized, move it to a different USB port and restart the software.
Each Imagen sensor has its own calibration files. If you use two or more sensors on one PC, run the installer once for each sensor's serial number — the calibration for each unit is installed automatically.
Email us with: your sensor's serial number (printed on the flat side of the USB connector), your Windows version, what the error says, whether this is a first installation, and if possible a photo or screenshot of the error. With that, we can usually solve it in one reply.
